Average Rate Option

A coverage tool where a series of fixations spot rate over the life of an option are used to calculate an average. If the average rate is below the exercise price, the bank must pay the difference with the customer. Otherwise, the option expires worthless, without payment. Average rate options are generally suitable for those who need protection against adverse currency movements still wishing to retain upside potential to the fullest.
